    My current code for my x-axis label is as follows:

    xlab=bquote(Variable~italic(E[1]))

    I want the text to read “Variable E1” where 1 is an italicized subscript (E should also be italicized). Currently 1 is a subscript, but does not show up italicized. Can this be corrected?

    Correction, it just became apparent the issue is not with italicizing subscripts but italicizing numbers. Help would still be appreciated though.
